I'm so excited to introduce a new online course:

Design-Your-Own
 Landscape Layout

Yes, you can be your own designer! In this course, I'll show you how to create a cohesive, hand-drawn landscape design "layout plan" for your dream yard (with DIY tips to guide you from inspired & overwhelmed, to planned & prepared).

Starting a landscaping or gardening project?

...But feeling overwhelmed with all the options?

...Maybe you're on the fence about hiring a designer?

...Or feeling that you could almost create your own design, if you had a little guidance?

Your Workshop Instructor

Eve Hanlin

Hi! I'm Eve, and I'm here to help you ask good questions, articulate the right goals, and guide you through the design process, so you can be best prepared to start your garden project.

Over my years working as a landscape designer for local clients, I've developed practical techniques and helpful resources for guiding clients through the design process.

Now, I can't keep up with local demand for my services! So, I've decided to create this online course business. This way, I can help more people. I'm so happy you're here, and I can't wait to help you turn your yard into something amazing.

My courses are a culmination of over a decade of studying plants, teaching local classes, and testing systems for designing beautiful, sustainable landscapes. My courses are designed to be intimate and empowering: an alternative to working with me as a designer. Through videos and assignments, I'll act as your guide to empower you to create the plan for your dream yard.

ABOUT THE COURSE

Design-Your-Own
 Landscape Layout

Yes, you can be your own designer! In this online course, I'll show you how to create a cohesive, hand-drawn landscape design "layout plan" for your dream yard

Learn practical design considerations so you can plan your own low-maintenance, natural, useful, and beautiful outdoor living space.
Follow the tips and techniques for prioritizing ideas, drawing a to-scale map of your yard, and putting all your landscaping goals onto a cohesive, hand-drawn "layout plan." A plan like this will provide clarity on your goals, making it easier when you are ready to bring your dream yard to life.
This online course is designed to be completed in 5 weeks, but you can go faster or slower if you prefer. You'll get access to all 5 "weeks" of design activities and instructions as soon as you sign up, so you can start designing!

Yes, you can be your own landscape designer!

No one knows your yard better than you.
No one knows your needs and wants and dreams better than you.

A good designer will learn your yard and your needs and wants, and apply their expertise to create a design that's custom made for you.  Of course, you have to pay the designer for the time it takes to learn these things about you and your space.

Good designers have incredible expertise and ideas. Hiring help is great for someone who doesn't want to take the time or ownership of the design process.

However, if you are someone who...

Wants to be more hands on
Learn new things about plants and design
And be empowered to design your yard yourself

Then this course is a good fit for you!

This course will help you design your own yard efficiently, but I'm not promising it's the fastest and easiest way to get a design done. It will take a few weeks of spare time, spent watching videos, brainstorming, learning, and designing. But at the end of it, you'll have a yard that is entirely your creation. Custom made for you (your family, your friends) by YOU.

At the end of this course, you'll have a hand drawn plan that will act as your guide.

I'll teach you how to create a layout plan, drawn to-scale (like a map of your dream yard). It will include all the elements of your landscape plan, arranged and prioritized.

Hiring help with to installation? Hand this plan to a landscape contractor and they'll understand your goals, easily.

Installing yourself? Having clear goals on paper will make it easier to get started and bring your dream landscape to life.

Eve is so knowledgeable - she makes this experience so fun with her suggestions and enthusiasm. I would recommend this course and Eve's YouTube videos to anyone interested in gardening, no matter if you are a beginner or an expert!

What is it like to take this course?

I built this course so you feel like I'm sitting right next to you, guiding you through the design process.

This online course is built to be completed in your spare time over 5 weeks, though you can complete it as quickly or slowly as you like. You can watch the videos and do the activities whenever you have time.
Yes, you get access to the whole thing when you purchase. But please don't try to do it all at once! It will be overwhelming that way! It's designed in 5 sections for a reason:
So you feel empowered each step of the way, from "I don't know where to start" to "I know what my yard will look like, now."

Each "week," you watch a series of videos filled with guidance, then complete the activities before moving onto the next "week's" videos.

I know... homework. But it's fun! I promise ! Not always easy, but fun.
This is a good time to note that this course is for people committed to doing the work. I am here to guide you, but it is up to you to go outside and get your hands dirty, do the research, put pen to paper, and make the decisions. I can't do that part for you!
Sometimes, making decisions will be the hardest part. I'll provide tips to narrow down the options, but it will always be up to you to decide what is best for you and your yard. After all, you're the designer! I'm just your guide.

Course Outline: Here's what to expect, inside...

Module 1: BRAINSTORMING AND RESEARCH

Collect inspiration, learn new helpful resources, survey your site, and evaluate your needs from the space.

Module 2: MAKING A BASE MAP

Head outside to start making a map, drawn to scale, that you will use throughout the course.

Module 3: DESIGN COMPOSITION

The most anticipated module: learn sustainable, practical, beautiful, low-maintenance design strategies and how to apply them to your yard.

Module 4: EXPERIMENTING WITH LAYOUTS

Use your base map and your research to start designing, using activities and "design exercises" that will make the creative process easier.

Module 5: FINALIZING DESIGN

Put all the pieces together and add some plants!

What is not in this course?

It does not include everything in the world about design, sorry 😂. But that wouldn't really be fun for anyone, anyway! Select any statement for more details

This course is...

NOT the fastest, easiest way to get a design done...

The course is designed to be completed in about 5 weeks, though some people take more or less time... Up to you! I am here to guide you, but it is up to you to get outside, do the research, put pen to paper, and make the decisions. I can't do that part for you! If you don't want to spend time making your own design, that's okay! But that means you should look into hiring a designer, not take this course.

NOT a live session with me...

I wish I could hang out with everyone! For what it's worth, this course is better than my one-on-one in some ways. First, because it is carefully crafted to be as helpful as possible: I put months into writing scripts for the videos and creating the best possible 5 weeks of resources. Also, it's tremendously less expensive than hiring a designer for 5 whole weeks! Plus, no waitlists. You can get started right away. Finally, because there is no live element, you can work through the course at your own pace.

NOT about installation...

It's about design and planning. About taking an inventory of your needs from the space, learning from your yard, collecting inspiration, brainstorming solutions, creating a base map, prioritizing elements, and putting it all together into a cohesive map or plan. At the end of this course, you'll have clear goals on paper. This will make it much easier to get started and bring your dream landscape to life.

NOT a perfect alternative to hiring a designer in all cases...

Sometimes people will take this course, create their own design, and then hire a designer by the hour to ask regionally specific questions or check their work. Not a bad idea! Altogether, still cheaper than hiring a designer for the whole project in most cases. This is up to you to decide, if you feel you have elements worth double checking (like a design on a slope, for example).

NOT specific to any region...

I am a designer from the Pacific Northwest, USA, and gardening is different everywhere. I share many USA resources. You could take this course and live anywhere in the world, but do know that I will not make specific plant recommendations for this reason. Instead, I'll empower you to find amazing plants on your own and determine if they will work well in your microclimate.

NOT meant to replace the expertise of any certified or licensed professional...

It is understandably not possible for any course to provide you with everything you need to know for your project! This course also does not seek to replace the expertise of a certified irrigation specialist, a certified pesticide/herbicide/fungicide applicator, a landscape contractor, an architect, an engineer, the list goes on and on. And lastly, a little legal clarity: Even though I am a designer and certified horticulturist in my state, I am not acting as your designer. This course is for informational purposes only: I will provide you with ideas and resources, but you will ultimately decide what is best for you and your yard.

NOT everything you need to know about plants...

While this course does teach you how to prioritize plantings, strategically use plants to solve problems (like creating privacy plantings), put the right plant in the right place, and design yards using plants and aesthetic design principles... It does not go deep into information about designing garden beds. It would all be too much for one course and not everyone needs the level of detail! For this reason, I plan to soon create a second course that goes deeper into plants and garden design. Take one course, the other, or both: they are being designed to complement each other and fit together well. See details below.

This online course is actually the first of two...

Take one, or the other (or both), depending on your needs...

This course, #1...

Design-Your-Own
 Landscape Layout

Make a layout plan to transform your yard: Learn how to gather inspiration, prioritize your goals, and compile it all into a plan or map (plus basic plant design tips).

"I want to transform my yard, but I don't know where to start."

"I need a map of my yard to make installation easier."

"Where do I put the pathways, patio, privacy hedge, and gardens?"

"How do I practically design a dream yard that meets all my goals?"

A future course, #2... Coming later! Stay tuned!

Design-Your-Own
 Garden

Design a stunning garden bed: Learn more advanced plant and garden design strategies to create stunning, thriving plantings with seasonal interest.

"I want to design a beautiful garden here, but I don't know where to start."

"I need a planting map for this garden."

"Should I put a pathway through this garden bed?"

"How do I best design for for winter interest and year-round blooms?"

Why two courses?

Some folks mostly need help laying out their landscape, with basic plant tips (course 1).
Others mostly need more advanced plant and garden design tips (course 2).

You can take one, or the other... or both!
(If you aren't sure which to take, then you need course #1. It sets the foundations!)

Why take this course and not hire a designer?

No one knows your yard better than you. No one knows your needs and wants and dreams better than you.

A good designer will learn your yard and your needs and wants, and apply their expertise to create a design that's custom made for you.  Of course, you have to pay the designer for the time it takes to learn these things about you and your space. Good designers have incredible expertise and ideas. Hiring help is great for someone who doesn't want to take the time or ownership of the design process.

However, if you are someone who wants to be more hands on, learn new things about plants and design, and be empowered to design your yard yourself, then this course is a good fit for you!

This course will help you design your own yard efficiently, but I'm not promising it's the fastest and easiest way to get a design done. It will take a few weeks of spare time; watching videos, brainstorming, learning, and designing. But at the end of it, you'll have a yard that is entirely your creation. Custom made for you (your family, your friends) by YOU.

What if I have no artistic skills?

You do not need any fancy artistic skills to take this course! If you can draw lines and circles, you'll do great. Feeling extra fancy? Add in some colored pencil. If you DO have artistic skills, all the better.

Do I need technical skills? Or any fancy software?

You do not need any advanced technical skills or knowledge of landscape design software to take this course. You will need access to a printer or scanner on a few occasions (this can usually be done at a local library, printing center, or even a loving friend's house if you do not own a printer/scanner). I also will be sharing spreadsheets as a part of the homework and activities, so being comfortable typing into these will help. I'll share some tips, of course!

We will not be learning landscape design software in the primary curriculum of this course. We'll be hand drawing our landscape design map.

If you do have experience with software or even graphic design skills, you can level-up your hand drawn map using these softwares: but that's totally optional!

What do I need to complete this course?

A computer, internet, access to a printer/scanner on a few occasions (library, printing center, or friend's printer will work if you don't have your own), and some level of comfort typing to spreadsheets.
A library card can help!
Most important, you'll need some spare time over the next 6 weeks (give or take), passion for your upcoming project, the desire to learn and research, and the confidence to make decisions when you have multiple options.

How long is this course? Do you get access to it all at once?

This online course is built to be completed in your spare time over 6 weeks, though you can complete it as quickly or slowly as you like. You can watch the videos and do the activities whenever you have time.

I haven't recorded everything yet, so I don't know the exact number of hours of video time, total. For now, know that it'll be enough to help you make your landscape layout plan!

Yes, you get access to the whole thing when you purchase. But please don't try to do it all at once! It will be overwhelming that way! It's designed in 5 sections for a reason:
So you feel empowered each step of the way, from "I don't know where to start" to "I know what my yard will look like, now."

Does this make you my landscape designer?

No: Even though I am a designer and certified horticulturist in my state, I am not acting as your designer. This course is for informational purposes only. I will provide you with ideas and resources, but you will ultimately decide what is best for you and your yard. Held harmless, not liable, etc. You do you.
It is understandably not possible for any course to provide you with everything you need to know for your project! This course also does not seek to replace the expertise of a certified irrigation specialist, a certified pesticide/herbicide/fungicide applicator, a landscape contractor, an architect, an engineer, the list goes on...
I do work hard to create a wonderful informative experience for you! The course is crafted with love, and I hope you love it.

Isn't it easier to have a designer do this for me?

Should I wait for your second course? Or will this one work for me?

Maybe! This first course (Design-Your-Own Landscape Layout) has foundational information in it: how to plan the layout your yard. It helps you figure out where to put gardens. It also covers basic plant design tips.
My second course goes into more advanced plant design. If you already know where you want to put your gardens, and you want to go beyond the basics, then course #2 (Design-Your-Own Garden) is for you. It will be made next, no exact timeline yet.
The courses are being desired to stand on their own, as well as complement each other. Take one, the other, or both: whatever is best for you!
If you're in doubt about which you course need, then course #1 is probably for you. Because if you aren't sure where you want your gardens to be, or how they will interact with other elements in your yard, it's probably best to start by making a layout plan.

What is Garden Project Academy?

Garden Project Academy is my new online education company, which offers online workshops, courses, and resources to help you have a successful gardening or landscaping project.

I offer free live workshops, mini courses, and YouTube videos. Of course, I have paid offers too: like this online course!

While I've been designing and teaching workshops for years, my online company is new. Through Garden Project Academy, I'm excited to be sharing resources and inspiration to make it easier for you to make the world a slightly better place, by starting in your own backyard.

Will you be recommending plants or providing plant lists?

Generally, no, because you could live anywhere in the world! Instead, I provide advice and ideas on how to find and choose the perfect plants for you. Really, this is more helpful than providing plant lists or specific plant recommendations as a part of the main course content, since you'll be empowered to find good plant choices on your own!

What is NOT covered in these workshops?

NOT the fastest, easiest way to get a design done...
NOT a live session with me...
NOT about installation...
NOT a perfect alternative to hiring a designer in all cases...
NOT specific to any region...
NOT meant to replace the expertise of any certified or licensed professional...
NOT everything you need to know about plants...
More details about what is in (and not in) this course are shared, above.

Why is this price?

According to Home Advisor at the time of writing this, the average landscape designer in the USA charges about $4,603 for a detailed plan for your property, or $50 to $150 per hour.
Considering you are doing the design work yourself, this course shouldn't cost that much.

BUT, this online course includes five weeks of awesome guidance from a landscape designer, empowering you to be your own designer. It's cheaper than having a designer in my area visit for just a few hours. I think it's a great deal!

Is this course an alternative to hiring a landscape designer or contractor?

No. You may want to hire a designer to make recommendations specific to your yard and your needs, especially if you live in a different corner of the globe.

I've been gardening for years. Will this course really teach me anything?

Many experienced gardeners have given me great feedback! I'm willing to bet you'll learn (or at least be reminded) of strategies that will help you with your upcoming project. If nothing else, my course can perhaps save you time as I guide you through the steps, from ideas to a drawn layout/plan.

I am/want to be a landscape designer. Will this course help me?

This course is designed for someone who wants to transform their own yard: It is not structured as a training for any landscape industry professionals.
However, if you still want to purchase the course for your own enjoyment, please do! I hope it helps you,  and I believe there is no such thing as too many plant lovers supporting other plant lovers.

(Just promise me you won't be that icky person who copies my course content, handouts, etc. or shares it with others, cause that ain't cool. Also, to access my courses, you must first agree to all my terms of use and other policies. Remember, all those lawyers out there... Rubbing their hands together like flies just waiting for copycats to do their thing...)

That being said, if you have an idea for an online gardening or landscape design course of your own, want to promote your business as a bonus in one of my courses, have a perspective to share, etc., please reach out to me, here! I would LOVE to help or support you if I can!

Who are you, and what makes you cool enough to teach this course?!

Hello! My name is Eve, I'm a landscape designer, certified horticulturist, and part time dahlia farmer from the pacific northwest corner of the USA. I help new and experienced gardeners plan and design their successful gardening projects. I'm not cool 😂, but I have been teaching local classes and offering local landscape design services for years, and am excited to now be creating online resources to help more people! Hence the beginning of Garden Project Academy.
