About Eve Hanlin
Your Workshop Instructor
Hello! I'm a landscape designer and certified horticulturist from the pacific northwest corner of the USA. I've been teaching local classes and offering landscape design services for years, and am excited to now be creating online resources to help more people!
There are many ways that plants and design can make the world a better place. Even small actions, taken in our own backyards, can add up to a magnified positive impact. Through Garden Project Academy, I hope to share resources and inspiration to make it easier for you to make the world a slightly better place, by starting in your own backyard.
This workshop is the starting point for a successful landscaping project
I'll provide you with some best practices, options, common mistakes to avoid, aesthetic considerations, and maintenance-saving tips to help you get started.
Of course, the workshop is only an hour and a half long! Although I do tend to talk too fast, 😂 I'm definitely not promising that this workshop will cover everything you'll need for your project.
However, I can guarantee that after the workshop you will have a better understanding of the important elements of a successful landscaping project. I hope to help you leave more prepared and excited about your upcoming project.

Who is this workshop for?
Anyone preparing to start a landscaping or gardening project! Big or small. You can be a complete beginner. If you're an experienced gardener, I'm willing to bet you'll learn (or at least be reminded) of strategies that will help you with your upcoming project.
I've been gardening for years. Will this workshop really teach me anything?
Maybe. Many experienced gardeners have taken this class and given me great feedback! The class is structured to provide relevant advice to help those starting a new landscaping or gardening project. I'm willing to bet you'll learn (or at least be reminded) of strategies that will help you with your upcoming project.
What if I'm only making small changes to my yard?
If you want to learn new strategies that will help you with your upcoming project, it doesn't matter how small that project may be, the resources can still be helpful.
What is not covered in this workshop?
My knowledge and training does have limitations, and for this reason, I will not going into detail on some topics.
Just a few examples:
-I am not a certified irrigation specialist, so I will not go into details regarding your best irrigation options or how to set up such systems.
-I am not a certified pesticide/herbicide/fungicide applicator, and you must research use of these or related products on your own.
-I am not a landscape contractor, and don't know everything about everything (I can't tell you how best to build a deck, install a patio, etc.).
Note that I will not be making specific plant recommendations, simply because you could live anywhere in the world! Instead, I'll provide advice on how to research and choose the perfect plants for you.
And finally, even though I am a landscape designer, I am not acting as your landscape designer, and this is a workshop for informational purposes. You may want to hire a design to make recommendations specific to your yard and your needs. I hope to provide you with inspiring ideas and considerations that may help you, though you will decide what is ultimately best for you and your project.
What's the difference between landscape and garden design?
Garden design is focused on plants/gardens, but landscape design considers the elements in the whole yard. The content of this workshop is garden design heavy, with many landscape design tips and strategies.
Is this workshop an alternative to hiring a landscape designer or contractor?
No. While I do believe it is possible for some people to "DIY" or make their own landscape design, it is not possible for one short workshop to provide you with everything you need to know for your project! Consider signing up for the waitlist for my online DIY guided landscape design course, which will cover many more details. My YouTube channel contains more advice, too!

Can I hire you for landscape design help?
Maybe: please contact design@gardenprojectacademy.com for more info! Please also consider signing up for the waitlist for my online DIY guided landscape design course, coming soon!

Yes! But if you can't attend live, please consider registering for the replay only to leave space in the live workshop for others. Replay access will be available for about a month after the event date.
Will you be recommending plants or providing plant list?
Because you could live anywhere in the world, I provide advice and ideas on how to find and choose the perfect plants for you. Really, this is more helpful than providing plant lists or specific plant recommendations as a part of the main workshop content, since you'll be empowered to find good plant choices on your own!
Do I have to show my face or talk in the workshop?
This workshop will be a Zoom Meeting. This means you will need to turn your camera and sound off as you enter the meeting if you do not want to be seen or heard. After doing so, only your name and any Zoom profile image you may have uploaded in the past will be visible.
If you would like to ask a question during the Q&A time, you can type it in the chat, unmute your microphone to speak, or turn on your camera (as you please).
Attendees will be also able to see your name in the attendees list and the chat, as well as anything you put in the public chat. Please note that this workshop will be recorded, so others can watch the replay. Please do not attend if you are not comfortable with this.
Will there be closed captions?
