There's a reason dahlias are so popular. They're stunning, easy to grow, and produce abundant blooms for months. Learn from a dahlia farmer with 11 years experience making all the mistakes, and learning from them. This is an overview of the basics, and great for dahlia beginners (or those looking to go beyond tossing dahlias in the ground and seeing what happens).

Springtime planning, site selection, preparation, and planting to bring your dream dahlia patch to life.
Summer pruning, deadheading, irrigation, fertilizing, and maintenance for maximum blooms.
Fall and winter care: when to dig up and store dahlias, dividing basics, tuber anatomy, and different winter storage methods.
Additional topics include: dahlias in containers, pests and diseases, bouquet care, roadside-flower-stand lessons, my favorite varieties for different uses, favorite dahlia resources, and more!

1.5 hours long (ish)

Why $10? I want to offer free resources and workshops to help people! Also, it takes a ton of time and money to put these workshops together. For now, it feels like a good balance to offer live events for free, and charge a small fee for 1 month access to the replay (for anyone who wants to watch it again, anytime, even if they couldn't attend live). This way, the great info in the workshops will live on, you will have multiple chances to learn awesome things for free, and I will still make a bit of money so I can keep making more workshops! Check out upcoming live workshops, here.

Are you planning a landscaping project, and hoping to do some (or all) of it yourself? Proper design and planning will save you time, money, and future maintenance. In this workshop, I'll share important do-it-yourself landscape design strategies that I've learned over years working as a landscape designer, to help you prepare for a successful dream-garden project.

Practical design considerations for planning a low-maintenance, natural, useful, and beautiful landscape.
Strategies for amending your soil, properly mulching, efficiently clearing the area, managing weeds, and removing or reducing lawn.
Guidelines for selecting the right plants (and tips for properly utilizing native plants in your landscape) to reduce maintenance and increase plant success.

Your Workshop Instructor

Eve Hanlin

Hello! I'm a landscape designercertified horticulturist, and part time dahlia farmer from the pacific northwest corner of the USA. I've been teaching local classes and offering local landscape design services for years, and am excited to now be creating online resources to help more people!

There are many ways that plants and design can make the world a better place. Even small actions, taken in our own backyards, can add up to a magnified positive impact. I hope to share resources and inspiration to make it easier for you to make the world a slightly better place by starting in your own backyard.

What to expect...

Will these workshops be offered live for free, again?

Yes! The plan right now is to offer multiple opportunities to attend workshops live for free. Some topics may evolve over time, or come and go. View upcoming workshops, here, or sign up for my newsletter to hear when new dates/topics are announced.

This is a new business model and I am still experimenting with how everything it will work... so there may be some evolution! If you can't find something you wanted, please reach out to me at workshops@gardenprojectacademy.com.

When will there be new workshops and topics?

The best way to hear when new workshops are scheduled is to sign up for my newsletter, here. I'll share when new workshop topics are announced and open for registration!

Also, you can view upcoming live workshops, here.

What is Garden Project Academy?

Garden Project Academy is my new online education company, which offers online workshops, courses, and resources to help you have a successful gardening or landscaping project.

I offer free live workshops, mini courses, and YouTube videos. Of course, I have paid offers too: like an online Design-Your-Own Landscape Layout course.

While I've been designing and teaching workshops for years, my online company is new. Through Garden Project Academy, I'm excited to be sharing resources and inspiration to make it easier for you to make the world a slightly better place, by starting in your own backyard.

Will you be recommending plants or providing plant lists?

Sometimes, but generally not, because you could live anywhere in the world! I provide advice and ideas on how to find and choose the perfect plants for you. Really, this is more helpful than providing plant lists or specific plant recommendations as a part of the main workshop content, since you'll be empowered to find good plant choices on your own!

What is NOT covered in these workshops?

My knowledge and training has limitations, and for this reason, I will not going into detail on some topics.
Just a few examples:
-I am not a certified irrigation specialist, so I will not go into details regarding your best irrigation options or how to set up such systems.
-I am not a certified pesticide/herbicide/fungicide applicator, and you must research use of these or related products on your own.
-I am a landscape designer, not a landscape contractor, and I don't know everything (for example, I couldn't tell you the best way to install a patio, as I haven't done this myself yet! However, I can share info about patio placement, size, and materials that may influence your design choices).

Note: I don't always make specific plant recommendations, simply because you could live anywhere in the world! Instead, I'll provide advice on how to research and choose the perfect plants for you.

And lastly, a little legal clarity: Even though I am a landscape designer, I am not acting as your landscape designer (unless you sign a contract with me for my on-site services). Workshops are for informational purposes only. I will provide you with inspiring ideas and resources, but you will ultimately decide what is best for you and your project.

What if I'm only making small changes to my yard?

It doesn't matter how small your project is, or even if you don't have a yard: if you are improving a garden space and want to learn landscaping strategies, gardening tips, and resources, then these workshops can help!

Is this workshop an alternative to hiring a landscape designer or contractor?

While I do believe it is possible for some people to "DIY" or make their own landscape design, it is understandably not possible for a short workshop to provide you with everything you need to know for your project! Consider signing up for the waitlist for my online Design-Your-Own Landscape Layout course, which will cover many more details. My YouTube channel offers advice, too!

Note: Even though I am a landscape designer, I am not acting as your landscape designer (unless you sign a contract with me for my on-site services). Workshops are for informational purposes only. I will provide you with inspiring ideas and resources, but you will ultimately decide what is best for you and your project. You may want to hire a designer to make recommendations specific to your yard and your needs.

I've been gardening for years. Will this workshop really teach me anything?

I often offer workshops that feature specialized subjects which may appeal to you as a more advanced gardener, depending on your interests (examples: "How to Grow Dahlias" or "Urban Foraging").

Also, many experienced gardeners have taken my more introductory classes and given great feedback! I'm willing to bet you'll learn (or at least be reminded) of strategies that will help you with your upcoming project.

I don't have a yard!

For now, many of my online design resources really do focus on "backyard" garden projects.
However, if you grow things in community spaces, containers, or sunny windowsills... Or if you're just learning and preparing for when you do have access to somewhere to dig, I hope you will still attend and enjoy the workshops!

Very soon, I will provide more resources specifically focused for those of us who don't have somewhere to dig! This is just the beginning.
